If you’re selling on Amazon Austria via FBA, understanding Austrian VAT rules is critical. Registering at the right time — and staying compliant — will protect your business and keep your Amazon account safe.

VAT Rates in Austria

Austria introduced VAT in 1973 as part of the EU system.

  • Standard rate: 20%
  • Reduced rate: 10% (e.g. food, books, medicines)
  • Special rate: 13% (e.g. hotels, cultural events, leisure services)

When Do Amazon Sellers Need to Register?
  • Austrian businesses must register if annual taxable turnover exceeds €35,000.
  • EU-based Amazon sellers must register if their sales to Austrian consumers exceed the €10,000 EU-wide distance selling threshold.
  • Non-EU Amazon FBA sellers must register immediately if:
    • You store goods in Austrian fulfilment centres, or
    • You ship directly to Austrian consumers.

⚠️ For non-EU businesses, there is no registration threshold — the very first sale requires VAT registration.

Fiscal Representatives & Agents
  • Non-EU businesses must appoint a fiscal representative in Austria. This representative is jointly liable for your VAT, so it’s a key compliance requirement.
  • EU sellers are not required to, but many appoint a local tax agent to simplify filings and communication with Austrian tax authorities.

Registration & Filing

To register for VAT, you’ll typically need:

  • Business incorporation documents
  • Proof of trading activity (Amazon seller account, invoices, contracts)
  • ID for directors or business owners

Registration is processed by the Austrian tax office and usually takes 4–6 weeks. Once complete, you’ll receive your Austrian VAT number (UID-Nummer), which you’ll need to update in your Amazon Seller Central account.

VAT returns are generally filed monthly, though smaller sellers may qualify for quarterly filing. An annual return is also mandatory, all filed electronically via FinanzOnline.

Risks for FBA Sellers
  • Late registration can trigger backdated VAT liabilities plus penalties and interest.
  • Fines can reach up to 10% of unpaid VAT.
  • Non-compliance can result in Amazon account suspension — one of the biggest risks for cross-border sellers.

Final Thoughts

For cross-border Amazon FBA sellers, Austrian VAT compliance begins from the first sale if you are non-EU, or once you pass the EU-wide threshold if you are based in the EU. Register on time, appoint the right representative, and file regularly to keep your business safe.
