If you’re selling on Amazon Sweden via FBA, VAT compliance is mandatory. Sweden has one of the highest VAT rates in Europe, and failure to register correctly can put your Amazon business at risk.

VAT Rates in Sweden

Sweden introduced VAT in 1969, as one of the early adopters in Europe.

  • Standard rate: 25% (applies to most goods and services)
  • Reduced rate: 12% (e.g. food, hotels, restaurants, cultural events)
  • Super-reduced rate: 6% (e.g. books, newspapers, public transport)
  • Certain services, such as healthcare, education, and finance, are exempt.

When Do Amazon Sellers Need to Register?
  • Swedish businesses must register if annual taxable turnover exceeds 30,000 SEK (around €2,600).
  • EU-based Amazon sellers must register if their total EU cross-border sales to consumers exceed the €10,000 EU-wide distance selling threshold.
  • Non-EU Amazon FBA sellers must register immediately if:
    • You store goods in Swedish fulfilment centres, or
    • You sell directly to Swedish consumers.

⚠️ For non-EU sellers, there is no threshold — VAT registration is required from your first sale.

Fiscal Representatives & Agents
  • Non-EU businesses are generally required to appoint a fiscal representative in Sweden, unless there is a tax cooperation agreement between Sweden and your country.
  • EU sellers do not need one, but many still appoint a local tax agent to handle VAT filings and communication with the Swedish Tax Agency.

Registration & Filing

To register for VAT in Sweden, you’ll typically need:

  • Business incorporation documents
  • Proof of trading activity (Amazon seller account, invoices, contracts)
  • ID for directors or owners

Registration is managed by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and usually takes 2–4 weeks. Once complete, you’ll receive your Swedish VAT number (Momsregistreringsnummer), which must also be updated in Amazon Seller Central.

VAT returns are generally filed quarterly, though larger sellers may need to file monthly, while very small businesses may be allowed annual filing. Returns are submitted electronically via Skatteverket’s online portal.

Risks for FBA Sellers
  • Failure to register or late registration can result in backdated VAT, penalties, and daily interest charges.
  • Fines typically range from 2,000 SEK to 10,000 SEK, with higher penalties for repeat offenses.
  • Amazon checks VAT status closely — non-compliance can lead to account suspension.

Final Thoughts

For Amazon FBA sellers, Sweden’s VAT rules are strict and apply early. With one of Europe’s highest VAT rates at 25%, timely registration and accurate filings are essential. Non-EU sellers must appoint a fiscal representative, while EU sellers must keep track of the €10,000 threshold.
