If you’re selling on Amazon UAE via FBA, VAT registration is a must. The UAE is a rapidly growing e-commerce hub in the Middle East, and Amazon requires sellers to stay compliant with VAT rules to keep their accounts active.
VAT Rates in the UAE
The United Arab Emirates introduced VAT on 1 January 2018 under the GCC VAT framework.
- Standard rate: 5% (applies to most goods and services)
- Zero rate (0%) applies to exports, international transport, some healthcare, and education.
- Some supplies, such as local passenger transport and certain financial services, are exempt.
When Do Amazon Sellers Need to Register?
- Resident businesses must register if annual taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000 (around USD 100,000).
- Voluntary registration is available for businesses with turnover or expenses above AED 187,500.
- Non-resident Amazon sellers must register immediately if:
- You store goods in a UAE fulfilment centre, or
- You sell directly to UAE consumers via Amazon.ae.
⚠️ For non-resident sellers, there is no threshold — VAT applies from the very first sale.
Fiscal Representatives & Agents
- The UAE does not require fiscal representatives for non-resident sellers.
- However, many Amazon FBA sellers appoint a local tax agent registered with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) to handle compliance and filings.
Registration & Filing
To register for VAT in the UAE, you’ll typically need:
- Business incorporation documents (trade license, certificate of incorporation, etc.)
- Proof of trading activity (Amazon seller account, invoices, contracts)
- ID for directors or business owners
Registration is completed online via the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) e-Services portal and usually takes 1–2 weeks. Once approved, you’ll receive your VAT registration certificate and TRN (Tax Registration Number), which must also be updated in your Amazon Seller Central account.
Filing requirements:
- VAT returns are generally filed quarterly.
- Larger businesses may be required to file monthly.
- All returns and payments are made electronically through the FTA portal.
Risks for FBA Sellers
- Late registration can lead to a fine of AED 10,000.
- Late filing penalties start at AED 1,000 for the first offense and AED 2,000 for repeat offenses, plus daily interest on unpaid VAT.
- Amazon requires VAT registration and compliance in the UAE — non-compliance can result in account suspension.
Final Thoughts
For Amazon FBA sellers, VAT in the UAE applies from the very first sale if you are non-resident. With a standard 5% rate, simple online registration, and quarterly filings, compliance is straightforward but strictly enforced.
