TikTok CEO Warns Proposed Ban Can Take App Away from 150 Million Users

TikTok’s CEO posted a video to talk about a dire scenario facing the company. Shou ZI Chew said that many US lawmakers are considering banning TikTok. This is over national security concerns. The TikTok ban will cause millions to lose their access to the platform.

Chew said there are over 150 million active TikTok users in the US. That’s a big increase from 100 million users in 2020. He also noted that the numbers represent half of America’s population already.

Chew revealed that some politicians are talking about banning the popular Chinese-owned company. He cautioned Americans that the move would take TikTok away from them.

The TikTok CEO also said five million American businesses use the platform. It’s one of the best ways to reach their customers.

In a video that had the US Capitol as a background, Chew encouraged users to comment on the issue. He asked the subscribers to tell Congress what they love about the short video app.

The move to ban TikTok is reportedly fueled by fear that user data from the US will reach China’s government. The platform’s owner is Bytedance, a Chinese tech company. TikTok denies the allegations.

The company said it has already updated its community use guidelines. It also offered to give more information on its plans to protect its US subscribers.

TikTok said it has already started deleting American user-protected data. It removed it from its data centers in Virginia. It has done the same in its center in Singapore. The company started doing this last year when they started routing new data to the Oracle Cloud.

TikTok claimed that the current US administration made demands on the Chinese owners. The Biden government wants them to divest their stakes in the company. Non-compliance would result in the company becoming banned in the US.

TikTok said divesting their investors’ stake in the company won’t solve the issues. The company said changing ownership doesn’t mean new restrictions on data access. There’s no guarantee the owners would impose it.

The video app platform has reportedly spent over $1.5 billion on robust data security systems.

More US lawmakers are standing behind the move to ban TikTok. One of these supporters is Cathy McMorris Rodgers. She heads the country’s Energy and Commerce Committee. Friday saw six more senators supporting bipartisan legislation. This would give President Biden the means to ban the platform.

News of the possible ban saw shares of Meta Platforms Inc. and Snap Inc. rallying. The two are TikTok’s biggest rivals.
